UPDATE: Seasonal influenza epidemics usually occur during winter months in temperate climates and are spread from person to person and even by direct contact with contaminated surfaces. A prolonged influenza season of 3 months or more may be associated with 2 or 3 influenza virus strains circulating within a community.
